Some of y'all saying how overpriced the menu was need to realize this place was in a tough financial spot before there remodel! The food prices are priced at a certain amount for a reason! Start basing your critics on the actual food not the price!

Went to Lowery's yesterday, for the first time since they had their Gordon Ramsay makeover. We have eaten here several times, since moving to the area in 2012, and have attended one banquet and one work breakfast there. The food and service was usually mediocre and overpriced. The decor was VERY dated (think Chesapeake Bay Seafood House in 1986, for my Maryland folks,) and the clientele was a mix of basic families and boomers. We noticed the Ramsay crew in town last weekend, and since we're huge fans of the chef, decided to give it a try after the hype wore off. We entered the newly remodeled part (they haven't finished the entire dining area yet,) and were pleasantly surprised at how updated and fresh it looked. The host was very friendly, and let us check out the new, limited menu they offered, before seating us. We were seated in an older section of the dining room, but that was ok. Once we ordered, the waitress came back with something called "spoon bread," which is a small bowl of an eggy, cornbread. It's very soft and full of flavor, and didn't last long! We ordered cheese fries as an appetizer, which were battered, covered in a really good cheese sauce and a good amount of real bacon chunks. It was just enough to satisfy, and not spoil the main course. One of my biggest pet peeves with appetizers, is they are either too much, and we end up wasting alot, or being too full by the time the main course comes, or they are too little, and I feel cheated and ready to eat the table by the time dinner arrives. Not the case here, they were the perfect amount. I ordered the seafood pasta, and my fiancé ordered the NY Strip. Her steak was AMAZING! Cooked just the way she ordered, and easy to eat. She ordered Worcestershire sauce, but didn't need it. My pasta had a really good, buttery but unique garlic hinted flavor, and the amount of seafood was just right. I didn't feel like I had more pasta than seafood. We ended the meal with bread pudding and an AWESOME peanut butter pie slice, that had real peanuts on top. We noticed several local groups come in, and after being seated and looking at the menu, got up and left. Lowery's has been in Tappahannock since the 1920's, and I guess a lot of locals don't like the change, but the population is aging out, and a successful business can't make it's way catering to the Early Birds and heavy, fried food. Things around here have to change to progress, and unless you want another rural ghost town, with a McDonalds and a bland Italian joint, you have to embrace it. I applaud the owners for taking the initiative. My only complaints were that they use corkscrew pasta in the seafood pasta dish, which makes eating with a fork difficult, I'd suggest linguine, and that the baked potato was a bit undercooked. Other than that, perfect dining experience!!!!!

Step back in time and make the drive to Lowery's! Nestled in the Northern Neck, this restaurant has a 70's vibe, complete with Early American decor and wood paneling. When you first walk in, you'll see a little bookstore. I've purchased several books here, poetry, history, cookbooks, etc. The nautical theme suits the large selection of seafood here. My table mates ordered oysters and said they were they best anywhere! I had the prime rib with all the fixin's and it was tender and melted in my mouth. But let's talk about the hush puppies... crispy on the outside, warm and fluffy on the inside. These can't be beat and are worth the drive!! And check out the origin of the term "hush puppy". Cute story how they got their name. The buffet is tremendous!! I've had the fried chicken and it's, yes, to steal a phrase "finger lickin' ..." well, you know. The burgers are fantastic and the spoon bread is out of this world! Lowery's serves real comfort food and lots of it. And the desserts are so good, you'll want more than one! The Boston creme pie is one of our favorites. We've always had great service here too. The owner came by our table to see how our meal was. It's personal touches like this that have kept this place in business for over 75 years. It's a landmark in Tappahannock. We make a day of it, go to Lowery's for a great meal, then visit the many antique shops in the area and drive by the water. Try it. You won't regret it. Happy eats!
